Internet drones over Africa

Google and Facebook want to beam internet using balloons.

Both companies are – perhaps in an attempt to avoid taxes – considering plans to bring internet service to unconnected parts of the African continent using solar-powered, unmanned, internet-beaming, flying crafts.

In an extremely interesting article in The Globe and Mail, Iain Marlow discussed how these developments are reflective of the West’s misconceptions about Africa. According to him, the ideas that float around about what’s happening in Africa are as disconnected from reality as Google and Facebook’s drones are from events on the ground.

However, outside urban centres, connectivity can still be an issue and there are plenty of rural areas, whether you’re near Lake Volta in Ghana or Crewkerne in Somerset, where mobile carriers don’t offer decent service.
