Part of New York City life, streetball is about much more than a ball and a hoop.

In back alleys and concrete parks, from the pickup games to the champion league matches, among diehard assassins and novice inductees, charisma, individual skill and a physical lyricism rule the courts. A close cousin to basketball, streetball is more flexible in structure and inventive in style and it can be played just about anywhere. It turns boys and men into a defiant brotherhood of airborne fanatics who speak a common patois. We took to the streets of the Bronx and Washington Heights to capture on film the fever-pitched courts.
